In what could prove a boon for the senior citizens and differently-abled individuals, the Haryana government has launched a one-of-a-kind digital and advanced post office in the city of Gurugram. In addition to providing the regular post office services, the center will provide additional facilities including passport services and Aadhaar enrollment.
The Haryana government launched the special center along with Enviro, the facilities management wing of Vatika Group, in Sector 82, new Gurugram. The new post office will keep digital records of all services provided by it. This will include delivering mails, accepting savings deposits, and providing life insurance covers, TOI reports.
The center will also keep a digital record of mail-tracking pin codes and enable online consignment tracking. This will ensure there are lesser instances of fraud, especially when it comes to money orders or cheques sent via post.
What serves as a highlight of the center is that it provides services dedicated to the senior citizens and differently-abled, including internet banking and money transfers, and interestingly also offers Aadhaar enrollment and passport services.
Back in 2017, UIDAI floated the idea of making banks and post-offices centers for Aadhaar enrollment. The idea was to limit the role of private agencies in the process following widespread uproar on user privacy due to the dependence on private centers. According to UIDAI, banks and post offices must become UIDAI registrars and facilitate Aadhaar registrations for their customers while the government sets up its permanent Aadhaar Centres.
A senior government was quoted in a report on News18 as saying, “A government-backed structure is more apt for this… We are not discouraging private operators and government representatives will oversee them but we feel people will veer more towards the former.”
For such a measure, UIDAI is relying on over 24,000 post offices in the country and more than 12,000 bank branches. Gurugram’s first digital post office with Aadhaar services appears to be a step in the same direction.
