Whether we like it or not, for some years now we have been seeing Artificial Intelligence (AI) software becoming smarter and smarter. We have learnt of it reading and writing novels, creating music, editing a movie trailer, and even playing football and chess. In fact, our smartphones now have operating systems, apps and camera software that are AI-supported. But this time, AI has done something that has been recognized as an original masterpiece. An AI has written its own fan fiction of Harry Potter, and you can read it now.

Botnik Studios’ AI read the official Harry Potter, and created its own chapter of fan fiction based on them. These pages are non-canonical, of course, but assuming you don’t mind apocryphal works, it’s worth giving a read.

In a post on Twitter, Botnik Studios shared its creation, where it explained that it used predictive keyboards that were trained with all seven books in the Harry Potter series. Training is the key part to AI like this, teaching it what it needs to know so that it can attempt to create its own version of the thing. In this case, that thing is titled “Harry Potter and the Portrait of What Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash.” Clearly the AI didn’t get the lesson on brevity.

The work by the AI is just three pages in length, and is pretty well written. You definitely wouldn’t confuse it for the writing of the author herself, but yes, a very creative fan, if you must. The language of the fan fiction is fun at times, describing things like a “magically magnified wind” and “leathery sheets of rain.” Its tendency toward flowery prose aside, the AI has all the makings of an amateur fiction author.

The chapter, named ‘The Handsome One’, which is the one shared by Botnik Studios, begins something like, “The castle grounds snarled with a wave of magically magnified wind. The sky outside was a great black ceiling, which was full of blood. The only sounds drifting from Hagrid’s hut were the disdainful shrieks of his own furniture. Magic: it was something that Harry Potter thought was very good.”

And if I at all need to convince you more to read this, I would tell you that it has a phrase that reads – “Ron’s Ron shirt was just as bad as Ron himself.”

I’m sure you don’t need any more motivation to read this Harry Potter fan fiction. Read it here.
