HMD Global has started rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo update for Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7 smartphones. The Finnish startup confirmed the release of the update for Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7 on its official Weibo account.
HMD Global has been testing beta version of its Android 8.0 Oreo ROM via Nokia Beta Labs program for Nokia 6 and Nokia 5 smartphones. However, it has skipped beta testing of Oreo for the newly launched Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7 smartphones, and has directly updated them to the stable version. The Nokia 6 (2018) was launched early this month while Nokia 7 was launched in October last year. Both the smartphones are available exclusively in China. The update brings speed and performance improvements alongside more fluid user experience. The Android 8.0 Oreo release also improves battery life with enhanced background management. Other features include support for gestures and monthly security patch for January.
The Weibo post also confirms that the first-generation Nokia 6 will receive Android 8.0 Oreo update very soon. HMD Global released Android 8.0 Oreo beta for Nokia 6 last month, but the company ran into troubles with the deployment of December security patch. It pulled down the beta release and the final version was released early this month. It now seems that HMD Global is planning for extended testing of beta release for Nokia 6 before the release of final version.
HMD Global’s smartphone lineup includes Nokia 8, Nokia 7, Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3 and Nokia 2 and it has already seeded the stable version of Oreo for its flagship Nokia 8. With the release of Android 8.0 Oreo for Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7 and beta release for Nokia 6 and Nokia 5, it has more devices running latest version than other leading smartphone makers.
HMD Global has also confirmed that it will release Android Oreo for Nokia 3 after the release of software update for Nokia 5 and Nokia 6. Its entry-level Nokia 2 is also confirmed to get Oreo with memory management features that are part of Android Go edition.
The company is also rumored to launch Nokia 7 with metal and glass design in India later this month. It features a 5.2-inch Full HD display, option for 4GB or 6GB RAM, 64GB storage and Snapdragon 630 chipset. The smartphone sports a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. The smartphone with 3,000mAh battery is available exclusively in China at a starting price of RMB 2,499 (approximately Rs 25,000).
Nokia 6 (2018) is the successor to last year’s Nokia 6 and it brings performance improvements with new chipset and minor design change. The Nokia 6 (2018) features a 5.5-inch Full HD display, 4GB RAM and comes in 32GB or 64GB internal storage. It borrows the Snapdragon 630 chipset, Bothie camera and Nokia OZO audio features from Nokia 7 with the fingerprint sensor moved to the back. There is a 16-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera. The smartphone is supported by a 3,000mAh battery similar to the outgoing model.
