The recently launched Honor View10 is today getting a software update that adds new AI capabilities along with a face unlock feature. The OTA update will be rolled out in a phased manner, and all users are expected to get it by January 24.
Honor View10 made its debut in India earlier this month at a price of Rs 29,999. The USP of the smartphone is its dual cameras at the back, along with the HiSilicon Kirin 970 chipset, which includes a dedicated Neural Processing Unit for handling AI-related tasks.
Until now, if you used the face unlock feature on the Honor View10, it would only show you the hidden notification content. With the update, it will unlock the device fully and take you to the home screen. To enable face recognition, you need to enroll your face by using the Face Recognition feature in phone settings menu. Once you enroll your face, the phone will be able to detect the positioning between you and the phone and adjusts the direction accordingly.
Honor has listed ways in which you can leverage the Intelligent Face Recognition technology. With the feature, whenever a new message comes in and you pick up the phone, it recognizes your face and lets you read the message without unlocking the phone and opening an app.
Similarly, the intelligent screen on the Honor View10 will know if you are reading something on the screen, as it can track your eye movements. Whenever it senses you are no longer reading, it will turn the screen off. This feature is especially useful if you are reading e-books or PDF files on-the-go.
The update will also enable Closed Eye Face Unlock Prevention which will prevent the screen from being unlocked if the eyes are closed. It will also add changeable background option for front camera, AI motion detection for rear and front cameras, super-resolution AI algorithm for detailed processing, and AI Zoom.
In terms of specifications, the Honor View10 packs a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with 2160×1080p resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the Kirin 970 is paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The phone is fueled by a 3,750mAh battery.
For optics, there is a dual-camera setup at the back with a combination of 16-megapixel RGB color sensor and a secondary 20-megapixel monochrome sensor. The primary 16-megapixel color sensor has wider f/1.8 aperture and supports AI functions like scene recognition supported by the dedicated neural processing unit. There is a 13-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and support for portrait mode and beautification feature. On the software front, it runs EMUI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo, and sports bottom-mounted speaker.
