HTC teased the launch of its upcoming flagship likely to be named “HTC U12+” this week. The launch is set for May 23 where it will reveal its competitor to iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9+ and the Huawei P20 Pro. HTC uses a very intriguing teaser image showing components that might go into the smartphone but however, it doesn’t seem to have gone down that well.
The components spread across the teaser image for the launch of HTC U12+ does seem to be that of Apple iPhone 6. A user over at AnandTech, who claims to repair phones for a living, spotted the components to be internals of the iPhone 6. In fact, comparing the picture shared by HTC with that of photos of a disassembled iPhone 6 from Fixit does reveal that the logic board and battery are exactly the same. It does not confirm that HTC used iPhone 6’s component layout since most smartphone makers procure components from common vendors in China and Taiwan.
However, there is also a possibility that HTC’s marketing team used a stock image without realizing it is the one belonging to the iPhone 6. Anyways, the question of whether HTC simply failed with its marketing idea or is actually using years old components from iPhone 6 will be answered on May 23.
Certain things are, however, are already confirmed. The HTC U12+ will be a premium flagship with specifications including Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 mobile platform. The leaked renders reveal that it will sport metal and glass design with liquid surface back that could end up taking crown for fingerprint magnet. The smartphone will be first flagship from HTC after selling part of mobile business to Google.
