During the earnings call last night, Apple reported strong results for the third quarter of the fiscal year. The company managed to sell 41.3 million iPhones, and also set new services revenue record. However, it is the Chinese tech giant Huawei that has successfully managed to displace Apple to become the second-largest smartphone seller worldwide.
According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung continues be the market leader with 20 percent market share (a decline of two percent). The company also saw a decline in shipments by 11 percent. In Q2 2018, the company shipped 71.6 million devices globally, compared to 80.4 million units for the same quarter in 2017.
Huawei has taken the second spot, with 15 percent market share (a rise of four percent). Meanwhile, Apple had a market share of 11 percent, showing no change compared to the previous year in the same quarter. The company shipped 41.3 million units in Q2 2018 – growth of one percent – compared to Q2 2017 where it shipped 41 million units. The fourth and fifth positions are taken by Xiaomi and Oppo, with market share of nine percent and eight percent, respectively.

“Huawei had a good second quarter in 2018 as it shipped more smartphones than Apple to capture the second spot in the global smartphone rankings, after 7 years of Apple-Samsung dominance. Huawei achieved this by launching smartphones in the premium segment and capturing the mid-tier segment with its fast-growing Honor sub-brand,” Tarun Pathak Associate Director at Counterpoint Research said.
Huawei shipments grew 41 percent annually for during Q2 2018, and credit can be given to the company’s continuous efforts towards expansion outside China. Shipments grew by 75 percent in Europe and 67 percent in Middle East. In India, the company has seen a growth of 188 percent, thanks to its online-only brand, Honor, which is now placed in top-five smartphone brands.
“Huawei with its Honor brand is offering a broad and refreshed portfolio at affordable price which is driving growth in the overseas market. Honor, which is already strong in the e-commerce segment, is now adopting a multi-channel strategy through branded stores in the South East Asia market. We expect store counts to increase in the future,” Pathak added.
Meanwhile, Xiaomi has also seen a growth of 43 percent where it shipped 33 million units globally. Tecno, has also managed to ship 4.4 million units in Q2 2018, compared to Q2 2017, a growth of 59 percent, and taking 10th spot, globally. However, the star performer has to be HMD Global that shipped 4.5 million units in Q2 2018, compared to Q2 2017 – a growth of 782 percent.
