Huawei’s HiSilicon chipset division is developing a new chipset called the Kirin 710, which will take on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, according to a new report by Digitimes. The report further suggests that the naming of the chipset isn’t even a coincidence, with Huawei positioning it squarely as a competitor to the Qualcomm SoC with the same name. However, the existence of the chipset hasn’t yet been confirmed by Huawei.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset was announced just a few weeks ago, and comes with a lot of promise. As suggested by its model name and number, the Snapdragon 710 sits between the flagship Snapdragon 800-series chipsets and the more affordable Snapdragon 600-series options. The 710 will be fabricated on the 10nm process, and will offer superior performance to the 14nm 600-series options, along with the battery efficiency of the newer process.

However, it won’t have the peak performance capabilities of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, and will naturally be much more affordable to implement on smartphones. This will allow smartphone makers to offer devices at more affordable prices, while offering a superior level of performance.

The goal of a similar Kirin chipset would be identical – to offer mid-premium Huawei and Honor smartphones that can sell at reasonable prices. Additionally, Huawei could also implement the AI capabilities we’ve seen on the Kirin 970 on the new chipset.

Currently, Huawei’s Kirin chipsets have a large gap between the flagship Kirin 970 and the mid-range Kirin 659, and the new Kirin 710 chipset could fill this gap effectively. Speculation currently suggests that the Kirin 710 could be fabricated on the 12nm process from TSMC, which will make it slightly inferior on technology to the Qualcomm option.

The new chipset could launch with the Huawei Nova 3, which could launch next month, and could also eventually makes its way to the Huawei Mate range on the ‘Lite’ device. Future Honor devices could also see the Kirin 710 implemented, considering that the Honor range focuses on affordable and mid-tier smartphones.
