Huawei is set to launch its P20 flagship smartphones at an event in Paris today. The event is scheduled to start at 2PM local time (or 6.30PM IST) and the Chinese smartphone is expected to announce at least two devices – Huawei P20 and Huawei P20 Pro.
These smartphones are also expected to be accompanied by Porsche editions, which will have same specifications but slightly tweaked design and premium pricing. Huawei P20 series has been part of the rumor mill as early as January and were initially expected to debut at Mobile World Congress. The reports suggest Huawei moved the launch to this month in order to ensure the announcement is not overshadowed by Galaxy S9 launch. The Huawei P20 will be the successor to last year’s P10 smartphone.
Chinese smartphone makers are not known for offering great cameras on their mobile phones. But Huawei’s P-series has always been about smartphone photography and the fact that it comes with Leica-branded camera setup only made it a credible competitor to Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy flagships. With Google’s Pixel 2, Samsung Galaxy S9 and Apple iPhone X having taken a lead as best smartphone camera, the P20 will be hoping to match or beat these devices with its camera prowess. Here is what we know about the upcoming P-series flagship from Huawei:
Design and Display
Huawei P20 and P20 Pro will be the first smartphones from the Chinese company to adopt a notch like iPhone X. At the launch of Honor 7X in London early this year, Huawei showcased its own Face ID rival with additional depth mapping and IR camera similar to Apple’s TrueDepth camera. It is not clear whether the P20 series will have the tech but the notch could be used to hide those sensors.
The leaked renders so far show that the smartphone will have really thin bezels but won’t have an edge-to-edge display design like the iPhone X and will instead have a tiny chin for Huawei branding. The back is expected to be made of glass and will mimic the rear camera module of iPhone X. Yes, the P20 series will have lot of similarity to iPhone X and it doesn’t seem to be coincidental.
Huawei P20 is expected to feature a 5.8-inch LCD display with a resolution of 2240 x 1080 pixels. The Huawei P20 Pro, on the other hand, will feature a bigger 6.1-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2240 x 1080 pixels. With the new P20 series, Huawei is choosing an even taller 18.7:9 aspect ratio for its smartphones.
Huawei has earned accolades from both tech enthusiasts as well as tech reviewers for its P-series. The P-series has been the pioneer of dual camera system and the P20 series will make the leap to triple camera system. The leaked renders confirm that Huawei P20 Pro will be the first smartphone to offer triple camera system at the back.
The P20 Pro is rumored to feature three image sensors at the back with the primary sensor pegged to be 40-megapixel in resolution. The primary sensor will be accompanied by another 8-megapixel sensor for 5X hybrid zoom (which combined optical zoom and digital zoom). The third sensor will be a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor for shooting black and white images. A leaked image detailing Huawei’s plan shows that the smartphone will also AI features to the camera and support Pro Night mode.
Huawei P20, on the other hand, will stick to the dual camera system seen on last year’s Mate 10 series. It will feature a 12-megapixel primary color sensor and a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor. It will lack the fancy hybrid zoom feature seen on P20 Pro. Both the smartphones are said to feature a 24-megapixel selfie shooter with support for features like bokeh mode.
Specifications and Price
Huawei P20 Pro and P20 will be powered by Kirin 970 chipset, which includes a dedicated neural processing unit. The P20 Pro will be the more premium of the two devices with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The P20 will offer only 4GB RAM, but the storage remains the same at 128GB. The P20 Pro is also expected to arrive in 512GB storage option.
Huawei P20 and P20 Pro are expected to run EMUI 8.1 based on Android 8.1 Oreo and will support connectivity features like WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC and USB Type-C port. The P20 is rumored to start at Euro 679 (around Rs 55,000) while P20 Pro is expected to be priced to rival iPhone X with a starting price of Euro 899 (around Rs 73,000).
