Huawei's P20 comes with dual-camera setup at the back, whereas the P20 Pro comes with a triple-camera setup at the back.

After months of leaks and rumors, the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro are finally official. The Chinese smartphone unveiled both smartphones at a special event in Paris. Just like the P20 Lite that was recently unveiled, the P20 and P20 Pro come with a FullView display, and a notch on top that houses the front camera, and other sensors.

Once again, photography is the highlight of the P20 and P20 Pro smartphones. The Huawei P20 comes with a dual camera sensor at the back, whereas the P20 Pro is the first compact smartphone to come with triple camera sensors at the back. Yes, the rumors were right, you get three cameras at the back. Here’s a look at the price, specifications and features of the smartphones.

Pricing and availability

The Huawei P20 is available starting today in the European market at a price of 649 Euros (approximately 52,200). The P20 Pro will be available starting April 6,2018 at a price of 899 Euros (approximately Rs 72,200).

Huawei P20 specifications and features

The Huawei P20 flaunts a 5.8-inch full HD+ LCD display running at a resolution of 2240×1080 pixels, which gives an aspect ratio of 18.7:9. At the heart of the smartphone runs Kirin 970 octa-core SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 128GB onboard storage. The storage can further be expanded using a microSD card. The chipset also has dedicated AI component to power apps that can use machine learning.

In the photography department, the P20 comes with a dual camera setup at the back. One is a 20-megapixel sensor and other is a 12-megapixel sensor, letting you add background defocus effects to your photos, and the cameras also add the ability to click photos with 2X zoom. The cameras also let you record slow-motion videos at 960fps in HD (720p) resolution. The overall DxoMark score achieved by the Huawei P20 is 102, which is higher than the Samsung Galaxy S9+ and Google Pixel 2.

Up front, there is a 24-megapixel front AI camera that uses the Kirin 970 SoC NPU to enable ‘Light Fusion’ to enhance your selfies. With a 3,400mAh battery and SuperCharge quick charging technology, the smartphone comes with a USB Type-C port for charging, data transfer and for audio. Yes, with the Huawei P20, the company has ditched the legacy headphone jack.

Other connectivity options include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, dual-SIM card slots, 4G LTE and VoLTE for HD voice calling. In the software department, the P20 runs Android 8.1 Oreo with EMUI 8.1 skin on top, and it also supports Project Treble that will enable faster software updates.

While most smartphone manufacturers are moving the fingerprint sensor at the back to offer a full edge-to-edge display on the front, Huawei is still keeping the fingerprint sensor on the front, just below the display. The smartphone will be offered in four colors – Ceramic Black, Pink Gold, Midnight Blue, Twilight, and Graphite Black.

Huawei P20 Pro triple cameras

Out of the three cameras, one is a 40-megapixel main RGB sensor, the other is an 8-megapixel 3X telephoto sensor with and the third is a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor that will help in capturing better low-light photos with less noise. Besides letting you add background defocus effects to your photos, the camera setup also allows for 5X hybrid zoom. The Huawei P20 Pro achieves ISO 102400 light sensitivity, which is at par with Canon Mark 5D IV professional camera.

The cameras are Leica branded with laser auto-focus and apertures ranging between f/1.6 and f/2.4. The Huawei P20 Pro also lets you record 960fps slow-motion videos in HD (720p) resolution. The camera comes with Master AI for scene detection to offer the right settings as per requirement. Up front, there is also a 24-megapixel front camera for selfies, video calling and for face unlock feature. The overall DxoMark score achieved by the Huawei P20 Pro is 109, which is higher than P20.

The Huawei P20 Pro flaunts a 6.1-inch full HD+ OLED display running at a resolution of 2240×1080 pixels, and an aspect ratio of 19:9. The screen has an iPhone X-like notch on the top as well.

Under the hood is a Kirin 970 octa-core SoC. The AI-based chipset also has a neural processing unit (NPU) that can do things like object recognition, and automatic screen recognition when clicking photos. The chipset is paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage.

Armed with a 4,000mAh battery along with SuperCharge quick charging technology, the smartphone comes with IP67 water and dust resistance, and it misses out on the legacy 3.5mm jack as well. The smartphone will be offered in four colors – Ceramic Black, Pink Gold, Midnight Blue, Twilight, and Graphite Black.

Connectivity options on the smartphone include Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, dual SIM card slots, and 4G VoLTE. The smartphone runs Android 8.1 Oreo with a layer of EMUI 8.1 on top. It also supports Project Treble delivery of software updates should be faster.
