According to the latest IDC report worldwide smartphone market grew by 54.7% in Q4 of 2011. The sudden jump in smartphone sales came courtesy Apple’s iPhone 4S which was released in October. The reports states that smartphone vendors shipped 157.8 million units in Q4 of 2011 in comparison to 102 million in Q4 of 2010 which marked a year over year growth of 54.7% higher than the estimated 40 % of growth while there was 49.2% growth from Q3 of 2011. Even on a full year basis the report noted that smartphone shipment volumes reached 491.4 million units in 2011, a 61.35% jump from 304.7 million units in 2010. Looks like Apple took the lead, closely trailed by Samsung while Nokia is now relegated to number three.
