Idea Cellular has emerged as the surprise player in India’s telecom industry by adding more subscribers than rivals in the past few months. The company’s subscriber addition has picked pace as it enters the final stages of merger with Vodafone India to create the country’s largest telecom service provider. The subscriber addition is mainly driven by new tariff plans that offer more data.
In line with that drive, Idea Cellular has announced a new Rs 149 tariff plan that is intended to compete with rivals including Bharti Airtel and BSNL. The plan takes on state-owned BSNL which has been aggressively slashing tariffs and increasing data benefits to contend Reliance Jio.
With Idea Cellular’s new Rs 149 tariff plan, subscribers will get unlimited voice calls on local, national and roaming. It, however, comes with fair usage policy. The tariff plan comes with voice calling limit of 250 minutes per day, and 1,000 minutes during the week. Also the calls can be made only to 100 unique numbers during the validity period. According to TelecomTalk, the plan has a validity of 21 days, and it offers benefits up to 100 SMS per day.
The Rs 149 tariff plan from Idea is a voice-only offer, and does not come bundled with any data benefits. In order to gain data benefits, Idea says users will have to make recharge on top of this plan starting with a Rs 92 plan that offers 6GB of data for a period of seven days. The tariff plan does not seem to be a pan-India offer, and is currently available only in select circles.

Airtel also offers similar voice-calling plan for Rs 299 where subscribers get unlimited voice calls, 100 SMS messages per day for a period of 45 days. BSNL, on the other hand, offers Rs 99 and Rs 319 voice-only plans that differ in terms of calling benefits. Idea also has a Rs 199 plan for prepaid customers, which offers 1.4GB data per day along with 100 SMS per day. This plan has a validity of 28 days.
