It has been raining data for India’s mobile subscribers since Reliance Jio commenced its 4G operations in 2016. The incumbent telecom players, namely Airtel, Vodafone and Idea, have been trying hard to match or better Jio’s offering. In one such suit, Idea Cellular has introduced yet another prepaid plan of Rs 499.
The new tariff plan comes with benefits that are in-line with Airtel’s offering. With the new prepaid plan, Idea Cellular is offering 164GB of 2G/3G/4G data, translating to benefits of 2GB data per day for a period of 82 days. Apart from the data benefit, the third larger telco player is also offering unlimited voice calls and SMS benefit with the prepaid plan. The tariff plan is valid across various circles and can be availed through recharge on Idea’s website or any other recharge portal.
According to TelecomTalk, the new prepaid plan is being offered as part of Idea’s Unlimited recharge portfolio, which was introduced with the intention of competing with Jio’s unlimited combo plans. Idea Cellular says that the plan offers 2GB of data per day and post which data charges of 4 paise per 10KB will be applicable. Though it comes with unlimited voice calling benefit, there is a fair usage cap of 250 outgoing minutes in a day. After that, Idea Cellular subscribers will be charged at 1 paise per second for the rest of the day.
In terms of calling, customers making more than 1000 minutes of outgoing calls during a period of seven days will be charged at 1 paise per second for the rest of seven day period. The terms and conditions just don’t end there. During any period of seven consecutive days, customers can make outgoing voice calls to only 100 unique numbers. After that, they will be charged 1 paise per second for the rest of the validity of recharge.
The Rs 499 tariff plan also comes with free roaming benefits but it is only applicable on Idea network and not on other networks. The plan comes with SMS benefits of 100 SMS per day and post that, Idea will charge Re 1 for local and Rs 1.5 for national SMS. The plan counters similar benefit from Bharti Airtel introduced last month, which offers truly unlimited data and voice call benefits.

In the case of Airtel’s Rs 499 plan, customers will get data speeds capped at 128kbps after consumption of 2GB daily data benefit. The voice calls also don’t come with any limit while Idea is limiting it to 250 minutes per day. Since the launch of Jio’s service, the cost of per GB of data has come down significantly in the country. With Idea’s Rs 499 plan, customers are essentially paying Rs 3.04 per GB, which rivals offers from other telecom players.
