After announcing its plans earlier this year, Idea Cellular is kick starting the first phase of the launch of its Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services starting March 01, 2018. Initially, the service will be available only to Idea employees, and in select cities across the country.

Idea’s VoLTE services will be launched in over 30 cities across four circles. These include Kochi, Trivandrum, Calicut, Pune, Goa, Nashik, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, and Hyderabad among others. Idea plans to cover all twenty 4G circles with VoLTE services by the end of April 2018.

In the first phase of launch, the services will be rolled out in four circles by March 2018. These circles include Maharashtra and Goa, Kerala, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh & Telangana. Commercial services will be launched progressively, on a circle by circle basis.

VoLTE service offers UHD call quality as compared to a standard voice call on a 4G network. Users will be able to call all mobile and landline networks using the service. It will allow users to automatically be routed to 3G/2G when they move out of 4G network while on the call using Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC) technology.

As for accessibility, the new service will be compatible with all 4G handsets. Further, Idea is also partnering with OEMs to ensure availability of Idea VoLTE capable devices in the market, prior to the commercial launch. Huawei has already released Over the Air (OTA) update for select devices, while OnePlus and Xiaomi will be releasing it soon.
