India abruptly switches off electric vehicle policy; industry reaches out for clarity

With a sudden and abrupt shift in gear, the Indian government decided against the formulation of an electric vehicle policy.

In June 2017, the Government of India mulled over the possibility of converting all automobiles across the country to electric vehicles. The deadline set for this move, back then, was 2030. Soon it set off the automobile industry talking about it. The announcement also caught the attention of Elon Musk who tweeted about it.

With a sudden and abrupt shift in gear, the Indian government has decided against the formulation of an electric vehicle policy. In addition, it said that incentives over and above those currently handed out will not be accorded to the industry. Union Minister for Roads Nitin Gadkari made the revelation at a press conference last week.

Considering the development came immediately after Auto Expo 2018 concluded, it has taken many by surprise. A report by BusinessLine states that manufacturers went the extra mile to showcase electric vehicle offerings at the expo, to keep pace with the Government s vision for 2030.

Mint reports that the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles plans to meet top government officials for more clarity on its position on electric vehicles after the government said there was no need for such a policy. In addition to the government, the group also plans to meet NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant and Minister for Heavy Industries Anant Geete. The report quotes two people familiar with the matter that the body would also write to the Prime Minister’s Office based on the feedback of the interaction with Geete and Kant.
