Infinix today launched Smart 2 smartphone in India. With a starting price of Rs 5,999, the smartphone competes directly with Xiaomi’s Redmi 5A, which is regarded as the best smartphone under the sub-Rs 7,000 market. The Infinix Smart 2 comes with a decent set of hardware, but does it have what it takes to take mantle away from Xiaomi’s Redmi 5A, as the king of the budget smartphones. Let’s find out.
Pricing and availability
There is very little here to differentiate between the two smartphones. Both the Xiaomi Redmi 5A and Infinix Smart 2 come in two storage and RAM variants that includes 2GB of RAM with 16GB of storage and 3GB of RAM with 32GB of storage. Not just that, both variants are also priced similarly at Rs 5,999 and Rs 6,999 respectively.
The Redmi 5A is available on Flipkart and mi.com. However, Xiaomi only makes the smartphone available through flash sales. On the other hand, Infinix Smart 2 is available exclusively on Flipkart.
Xiaomi Redmi 5A comes with 5-inch HD screen that features a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels with an aspect ratio of 16:9. Here the Infinix Smart 2 gets the upper hand as it comes with a 5.45-inch HD+ screen that sticks to the current trend with its 1440 x 720 pixels resolution and taller 18:9 aspect ratio. Both smartphones look similar. However, the Redmi 5A flaunts a metal body, while Smart 2 features a plastic build, which comes with a smooth metallic finish at the top.
Both smartphones come equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera. However, the sensor on the Xiaomi Redmi 5A comes with an aperture of the f/2.2, while the one on the Smart 2 comes with f/2.0 aperture. Besides that, the latter also features a dual-LED flash.
At the front, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A comes with a 5-megapixel camera, which comes with an aperture of f/2.0. The Smart 2 on the other hand, flaunts an 8-megapixel selfie camera, that comes equipped with dual-LED flash as well.
Hardware and software
The Xiaomi Redmi 5A packs in a Snapdragon 425 quad-core SoC that boats clock speeds of 1.4GHz. It is tagged alongside a 3,000mAh battery. In comparison, Smart 2 runs on a MediaTek MT6739 SoC, which features four cores and maximum clock speeds of 1.5GHz. It is fueled by a slightly bigger battery of 3,050mAh capacity.

Being an older device, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A runs an older Android Nougat operating system, which is layered with MIUI 9 interface. Here the Smart 2 also gets a slight advantage, as Infinix has loaded it with the latest Android 8.1 Oreo operating system, running the company’s XOS interface on top. Connectivity options are more or less the same including 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, dual SIM, GPS, microUSB port and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
