Earlier this month, Instagram and Snapchat had to pull back the GIF sticker feature from the app, owing to some racist slur that started to trend on the app. However, after a few weeks of investigation and working on the feature, Instagram has turned the GIF stickers back on. Most users have already started to see the feature, while others should start seeing it over the coming days.
“We’ve been in close contact with GIPHY throughout this process and we’re confident that they have put measures in place to ensure that Instagram users have a good experience,” Instagram said in an official statement. GIPHY sources the stickers to both Instagram and Snapchat. While Instagram has made the feature live back on, there is still no word about if and when Snapchat plans to bring the feature back.
In response to the whole fiasco, GIPHY has also said that “…we wanted to take a moment and sincerely apologize for the deeply offensive sticker discovered by a user on March 8, 2018. To anyone who was affected: we’re sorry. We take full responsibility for this recent event and under no circumstances does GIPHY condone or support this kind of content. The content was immediately removed and after investigation a bug was found in our content moderation filters affecting stickers. This bug was immediately fixed and all stickers were re-moderated.”
“We have also finished a full investigation into our content moderation systems and processes and have made specific changes to our process to ensure something like this does not happen again,” the company added.
And to ensure that “this does not happen again”, GIPHY has made some change to the sticker suggestions a bit. The GIF platform says that after fixing the bug in content moderation filters and confirming that the offensive sticker was successfully detected, it re-moderated the entire sticker library four times.
Additionally, GIPHY says that it has added another level moderation before each sticker is approved into the library. This is now apparently a permanent addition to the moderation process. Along with the comeback of Instagram stickers, the platform has also announced a new feature for advertisers. Instagram announced that starting today, when advertisers upload Instagram Feed creative within Ads Manager, it will be transformed into the full screen format of stories, allowing advertisers to run ads easily across Instagram.
