Last week, a character-based bug on iOS was discovered that can disable messaging apps, and also crash your device. The bug can cause apps on iOS as well as Mac OS to crash when rendering two characters in Telugu. Now, online miscreants are taking advantage of this bug by sending messages on social media apps containing these Telugu characters in the hopes of crashing users’ iOS devices.

Some users on Twitter have started inserting these characters into their handles, while others are sending DMs with these characters. Others are tweeting the characters with messages like “read this to log off instantly” and “retweet this to crash anyone using an Apple device,” TechCrunch reports. If you were to receive a notification about a tweet with such characters, your device is most likely to crash.

Before Apple rolls out a fix, the only way to get the crashed app working again is to reinstall it from scratch. Twitter users have also discovered workarounds like logging in using a web browser and then blocking those troll accounts.

Apple recently acknowledged this issue, and said that a fix is coming via a minor iOS update. This update will be rolled out ahead of the major iOS 11.3 release. A fix for this bug will be rolling out on watchOS and macOS as well.
