Apple recently rolled out iOS 11.3, which was seen as one of the most significant updates since iOS 11’s release. The update brought along many bug fixes with it too, along with some new features. However, turns out, the significant update is now causing some significant issues, specifically for iPhone 8 users who are using aftermarket screens.
Similar issue took place last year too, when some iPhone 7 became unresponsive. Back then too it was found that the problem was caused only to the devices that had third-party screens by independent repair stores. Patch notes also mentioned that software updates can kill core functionality on phones repaired by a third-party.
Basically the same is happening to the iPhone 8 as well. This means, if you broke your iPhone 8’s screen, and had to get it repaired by anyone other than Apple, you will will have a hard time using the phone post iOS 11.3 update. Clearly, Apple is doing this to prevent any kind of third-party repairs.
“This has caused my company over 2,000 reshipments,” Motherboard quotes Aakshay Kripalani, CEO of Injured Gadgets, a Georgia-based retailer and repair shop, told me in a Facebook message. “Customers are annoyed and it seems like Apple is doing this to prevent customers from doing 3rd party repair.”
Reportedly, every native iPhone screen is powered by a small microchip, and it is that chip which is believed to be the reason behind the issue. For the past six months, shops have been able to replace busted iPhone 8 screens with no problem, but something in the update killed touch functionality. According to Motherboard, “Third-party screen suppliers have already worked out the issue, but fixing the busted phones means re-opening up the phone and upgrading the chip.” It remains to be seen whether Apple will issue a new software update that will suddenly fix these screens.
