Apple has added a new feature to its upcoming version of its mobile operating system iOS 12 to improve its existing authentication system Face ID. iOS 12 now allows support to add multiple users to register on Face ID, a feature that it first introduced with the launch of iPhone X. Face ID can now recognize up to two faces as reported by 9to5mac. According to the report, users can also “set up an Alternative Appearance” which Apple notes in its description as “In addition to continuously learning how you look, Face ID can recognize an alternative appearance”.
This would indicate that people can setup Face ID to recognize them in hats or in other accessories that would make it difficult for Face ID to identify them. The interesting thing to note here is that this also lets Face ID identify a different face with “up to two users to register their face” with the authentication system. As pointed out in the report, this works perfectly in line with Apple’s plans to add Face ID in a future model of iPad allowing multiple users to use the same iPad.
Watch: Apple iOS 12 features
Even if this new multi-user, multiple faces feature may be intended for Face ID on the iPad, the feature seems to be working on the iPhone X at the time of writing. The report also points out that the iPhone X does not give them an option to reset back to single face after setting up two faces.
iOS 12 does allow users to remove both the faces to reset which means that users will lose all the data that iOS has gathered for the original face. This would have pleased the Many Faced God if Game of Thrones was a real thing but skipping that alternative reality, this is one of the features that was not revealed during the keynote address at WWDC 2018, the annual developer conference by Apple.
