Kejriwal, Modi and Leone trended on Yahoo India in 2013

It is the time of the year when companies take a look back and reveal the trends recorded within the past year. Yahoo India too has come out with its 2013 Year in Review report which highlights the popular search results and trends seen in 2013. Yahoo points out that from searches related Narendra Modi and Arvind Kejriwal in politics and Rahguram Rajan in economic sector, to 100 years of cinema and Sunny Leone’s craze in Bollywood, and some offbeat travel destinations, the year had witnessed a series of new as well as old online trends. The top two cars of the year were Honda Amaze and Ford Ecosport. Here is more on Yahoo’s Year in Review in India for 2013.

The general elections resulted in some heavy search for BJP’s prime ministerial candidate and Gujarat CM Narendra Modi (NaMo), who became the top newsmaker of the year, pushing Arvind Kejriwal to second position. In fact Narendra Modi also managed to get in to the most searched personalities’ category, which is usually ruled by the Bollywood celebrities, and held tenth position. The most researched personalities came out to be Sunny Leone, who toppled top rankers like Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif among others. Sunny Leone was also amongst the top charters in Google’s Zeitgeist list of 2013. Deepika Padukone however was the Yahoo Lifestyle Fashionista of the 2013. Talking about fashion and lifestyle categories, 2013 was all about nerdy frames, neon colors, and plaid fashion.

2013 marked 100 years of Indian cinema, which was the most searched Bollywood moments of the year, followed by Kamal Hasan’s controversial movie Viswaroopa. Netizen also searched for 90s famous actor Pran’s demise early this year. Chennai Express created box office history and turned out to the biggest grosser in the history of Indian cinema.

Moving to cricket, 2013’s biggest cricketing moment for netizens was when Sachin Tendulkar announcement of retirement from cricket. Otherwise, Virat Kohli stood as the top cricketer of the year, followed by Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin.

Among the top finance newsmaker of the year, the newly appointed Governor of Reserve Bank of India, Raghuram Rajan raked in to the top spot. And policies-wise, the Food Security Bill, the Land Acquisition Bill and the Pension Bill were the most widely discussed financial events online in 2013.

Travel destinations-wise, while Jaisalmer in Rajasthan was the most searched places by travelers, lesser known places like Tranquebar in Tamil Nadu, Varkala in Kerala and Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh were also seen gaining interest of the netizens.
