Kobo takes on Amazon’s Kindle, launches e-book readers in India starting from Rs 7,999
Kobo, Toronto-based, Japanese-owned e-book retailer manufacturer of e-book readers, has launched its range of e-book readers in India. The company’s e-books were already accessible via its smartphone apps available for smartphones and tablets running on iOS, Android, Windows and BlackBerry. The company has launched four e-book readers – Kobo Glo, Kobo Touch, Kobo Arc and Kobo Aura HD, which start at Rs 7,999 and go up to Rs 13,999. The devices will be available in India starting today from Croma, Crossword and WHSmith. Kobo claims it has a catalog of over 4 million e-books in 68 languages, which covers 95 percent of India’s best selling titles. Earlier this year Amazon had also launched its Kindle e-book readers in India.
The Kobo Touch comes with a 6-inch E-Ink XGA Pearl touchscreen with 800x600p resolution. It packs in a Freescale 508 processor with 2GB of internal storage and up to 32GB of external storage on microSD. It supports 10 font styles and 24 font sizes, and PDF, JPEG and TIFF file formats amongst others. On the connectivity front, it can be connected via Wi-Fi and USB. This device can also last for up to one month on a single full charge. It is priced at Rs 7,999. It will be available for Rs 6,999 as a special Diwali offer till November 3.
The Wi-Fi enabled Kobo Glo is also a 6-inch tablet with XGA Pearl E-Ink touchscreen with full HD (1024x768p) resolution. Its display offers a glare-free and fingerprint-resistant reading experience. The display of this eReader comes with built-in ComfortLight technology for even light distribution, which was first seen on the Kindle Paperwhite. It is powered by 1GHz processor with 2GB of internal storage and up to 32 GB of external storage on microSD card. Talking about the battery backup, it offers over one month with Wi-Fi turned off and up to 70 hours of continuous usage with ComfortLight on. Other features include support for microUSB, 8 font styles with 24 font sizes, built-in dictionary, library personalization, predictive search, brightness controls, double-tap PDF zoom in, and SimpleTurn page turning. It is priced at Rs 10,999.
The Kobo Arc is a 7-inch Android tablet running Android 4.1.1 and it comes with the Kobo Reading Life interface for reading e-books and unlike Amazons Kindle Fire range of Android tablets one can access Google Play Store on it. On the specifications front, we are looking at a 7-inch 1024×600 pixel display, a MediaTek quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage with an option to add another 32GB by using a microSD card. It is priced at Rs 11,999 and will be available for Rs 9,999 till November 3 under a special Diwali offer.
Finally, the Kobo Aura HD features a 6.8-inch 1,440×1080 pixels Pearl E-Ink display with ComfortLight frontlit technology, which sounds similar to what Amazon provided in the Kindle Paperwhite. It also features a 1GHz processor, 4GB of internal memory with a microSD card slot and a battery that can last for up to two months if used for 30 minutes every day. It is priced for Rs 13,999.
