Yesterday we exclusive reported the tie-up between Intel and Lava to launch the first commercial Android smartphone running on Intel’s Medfield processor in India. Today Orange became the first carrier to announce the smartphone, codenamed Santa Clara, which it plans to launch over the summer. We can now confirm that Lava’s as yet unnamed smartphone brand will launch the same device in India for approximately Rs 25,000 in the coming weeks. Multiple sources close to Intel have confirmed the development.

We are looking at a 1.6GHz processor, 8.0 MP rear camera capable of recording videos in 1080p and capturing photos in bursts of 10 per second, micro HDMI port, 16GB of internal memory and 4-inch 1024×600 pixel display. We hear that Intel has designed the entire product and is looking at launching it globally before established OEMs like Motorola and Lenovo launch their products, which will feature more aesthetically pleasing design.

What remains to be seen is whether consumers in India are ready to drop that sort of money on a brand like Lava or whatever the new brand is called.
