Leica has launched the C-Lux, a new compact camera with a built-in long-zoom lens. The camera comes with a 15X optical-zoom capable lens (which is the same as a 24-360mm zoom lens on a camera that allows interchangeable lenses), and also has an aperture of f/3.3-6.4 and a 1-inch 20.1-megapixel sensor. And like all other Leica cameras, the C-Lux comes with the brand’s classic styling and design.

In terms of color options, you’ll have a choice between ‘light gold’ and ‘midnight blue’, with the former definitely looking more eye-catching if not quite as toned down as the latter. You additionally get 49-point fast autofocus, 10fps continuous shooting and 4K video recording with a 15-minute limit.

Naturally, the key feature of the camera is its 15X optical zoom lens, which will allow you to zoom close into the action. The C-Lux will therefore make for an excellent companion at horse races or luxury vacations at Lake Como or even a fancy safari lodge on the Serengeti. Being a standard compact camera, it comes with a typical point-and-shoot philosophy, making this an ideal luxury camera for amateur users who just want nicer photos.

The Leica badge obviously adds a significant amount to the price, and the Leica C-Lux is priced at $1,050 (approximately Rs 71,000). For comparison, similar options from Sony with more optical zoom are available at around Rs 25,000 or less, giving you an indication of just what kind of premium you’re paying for the Leica C-Lux. But with Leica comes a promise of image quality and style that can’t be matched by most brands in the market today, as we’ve described in our review of the Leica D-Lux Typ 109.
