Lenovo and Intel together have introduced the first built-in authentication which is in compliance with FIDO (Fast Identity Online) Alliance standards. The built-in authentication process does away with passwords and enables two ways of authentication for added security while browsing, working and shopping online. This is available on Lenovo PCs powered by 7th and 8th Gen Intel Core processors.
The compatible devices will have this FIDO-certified security integrated which is based on Intel Online Connect and Intel Software Guard Extensions (Intel SGX). The lineup includes Yoga 920, IdeaPad 720S, ThinkPad X1 Tablet (2nd generation), ThinkPad X1 Carbon (5th generation), ThinkPad Yoga 370, ThinkPad T570, ThinkPad P51s, ThinkPad T470s, ThinkPad X270 and ThinkPad X270s. Intel Online Connect can be downloaded, and it will also be made available via Lenovo System Update and Lenovo App Explorer.
Essentially, this authenticator will ensure safety while logging in on websites and services like Google, Dropbox, Facebook and PayPal. There are two ways these FIDO authenticators are available – one is through fingerprint recognition, and the other through an on-screen button. To begin with, the fingerprint sensor on your Lenovo laptop will be used to authenticate logging in on payment services like PayPal. The second process is a 2 factor authentication process which comes after you enter your standard user ID and password access. After the first level of authentication, users will be prompted to click a button to log into websites like Google, Facebook, Dropbox, among others. Other than users getting additional security, Lenovo says that merchants will also be benefited – “With authenticators built directly into PCs, merchants can extend enhanced security measures to millions of users who routinely use their computer to access social media, banking information and online shopping.”
