Leading venture capitalist Mary Meeker has, since 2015, released her annual report on the key internet trends of the year. This report helps us get a clearer picture of what to expect with the internet going forward. The 2018 Mary Meeker annual report is here, and we’ve explored the key takeaways from the report this year. The full report is a 294-page affair, so we’ve broken it down to some key statistics and factoids.
This year, about 3.6 billion people will have access to the internet, representing half of the world’s population. While there’s still some way to go and a lot of potential for growth, the internet has hit a point where growth of adding users will slow. Individual web services will have a harder time adding new users, as major branches have leading services that control the lion’s share of traffic in their domains.

Mobile usage is on the rise, and adults in the US have spent more time on their phones in 2017 as compared to 2016. Mobile shipment growth rate is flat, though, as the improving quality of devices and the general rapid penetration over the last couple of years have meant that most people that could afford a mobile phone have one already. Mobile advertising is also on the rise as a result.
Cryptocurrency is definitely a popular term on the internet today, although it appears to be past its peak as the boom in cryptocurrency values has subsided and people are losing interest in the potential to earn big bucks quickly. Nonetheless, Coinbase has added four times as many users since January 2017.
13 percent of all retail purchases globally are happening online, Amazon is seeing an increase in product searches and online subscription services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Spotify continue to see growth.
