Micromax has confirmed that it will be the first smartphone maker to launch an Android Oreo (Go edition) smartphone. The homegrown smartphone maker has announced that the device will be called Bharat Go and will be available by the end of this month.
The Bharat Go will be the first smartphone in the country to feature Android Oreo (Go Edition). Google had announced Android Oreo Go edition at Google for India event last month. The operating system is aimed at developing markets such as India and comes with optimized Android experience for entry-level smartphones.
“Taking its mission of connecting the unconnected ahead, and providing the best in class mobility devices, Micromax will introduce BHARAT GO to deliver optimized Android experience as an entry level smartphone to millions of Indian consumers,” Micromax said in a released statement.
With over a billion users on its Android operating system, Google is aiming to attract the next billion users with its Oreo Go Edition. The Android Oreo Go Edition comes with redesigned apps like Google Go, YouTube Go and Files Go to offer a streamlined experience that don’t take much memory on the device.
The operating system will work with devices offering 512MB or 1GB of RAM and have just 8GB of internal storage. Micromax has not revealed final specifications of Bharat Go just yet but it is likely to use chipset from either Qualcomm or MediaTek, since both the chipmakers have confirmed their support for the new version of Android. It is likely to include 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage and promised upgrade to new version of Android and monthly security update.
A report early this month claimed that Micromax’s first Android Oreo Go smartphone will be priced around Rs 2,000. At that price, the Bharat Go will undercut many other entry-level 4G smartphones in the market and serve as an ideal option for first time smartphone buyers. Other Indian smartphone makers like Intex, Lava and Karbonn are also believed to be working with Google to offer Android Oreo Go devices.
HMD Global, the Finnish startup with rights to sell Nokia-branded smartphones, is also working on an Oreo Go device called Nokia 1. The smartphone is rumored to feature 1GB, 8GB storage and run Android Oreo Go Edition out of the box.
