We’re just wrapping up a hectic day where we had not one, not two, but over six smartphone launches. Lenovo-owned Motorola announced six smartphones today, three each in Moto G6 and Moto E5 series. Huawei, on the other hand, launched the Honor 10 smartphone and Honor MagicBook ultrabook. Apple iPhone X successor could feature dual SIM card slots, ‘trustjacking’ iPhone hack surfaced, and more. Today is April 19 and here are the top news stories of the day.
Moto G6, Moto E5-series launched
After skipping MWC 2018, Motorola has today launched six new smartphones. Three of these smartphones include Moto G6, Moto G6 Play and Moto G6 Plus, all of which come with 18:9 displays, glass back design and run Android Oreo out-of-the-box. While the Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus feature dual cameras at the back, the Moto G6 Play comes with a single camera module at the back. All three smartphones also feature water repellent nano coating.
While the Moto G6-series are mid-range smartphones, the company also announced entry-level Moto E5-series smartphones with glass back design and Android Oreo update. These include the Moto E5 Play, which is the most affordable of the lineup and features 16:9 display. The Moto E5 Plus and Moto E5 feature 18:9 HD+ displays. The Moto E5 Plus also comes with a massive 5,000mAh battery.
Honor 10, Honor MagicBook launched
Huawei also launched the Honor 10 smartphone in China with a 19:9 full screen display along with a notch. The smartphone takes its design cues from the Huawei P20 Pro with the glass back and attractive color scheme.
The Honor 10 features dual cameras at the back, and is powered by AI-based Kirin 970 octa-core SoC. The dual camera setup includes a 24-megapixel primary sensor along with a 16-megapixel secondary sensor. Up front, you have a 16-megapixel sensor for selfies and video calling. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo with EMUI 8.1 OS out of the box.
Huawei also launched the first Windows 10-based ultrabook under Honor branding. Called Honor MagicBook, it is as sleek as the Apple MacBook Air. Powered by Intel’s 8th generation Core i5 or Core i7 processors, based on the variant you choose, the laptop also features 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB onboard storage.
WhatsApp gets priority notifications
After adding ‘dismiss as admin’ feature, WhatsApp has also added priority notifications feature that allows you to enable high-priority notifications for either individual chats or group chats. The feature will pinned messages on the top of the notification center.
Amazon Prime now has 100 million members
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos revealed that the e-commerce giant has hit a new milestone with 100 million Amazon Prime members. Amazon Prime service offers free two-day shipping along with other perks to the members. In India, the service is priced at Rs 999 per year, and includes subscription to Amazon Prime Video and Amazon Prime Music.

New iPhone hack surface
While the Apple iPhone stands out to be one of the secure and trustworthy smartphones, the same trust could be exploited with an iOS hack. Security researchers have discovered that a type of hack called “trustjacking” which uses a little-known Wi-Fi feature to access the data stored on the device. As of now, researchers haven’t found any instances of the hack being exploited, but they expect Apple ensure safety of iPhone users.
In another report, it seems like Apple will finally have dual-SIM functionality on the iPhones, something that has existed on Android smartphones for years. Whether or not we see dual-SIM iPhones only time will tell. Reports indicate that the next-gen iPhones may come with the functionality.
