Modular functionality on smartphones is still at its nascent stage, but Motorola garnered positive attention for bringing ease-of-use to consumers with its semi-modular Moto Z smartphones. Adding to the segment, Motorola today launched the Moto Z2 Play in India. The second-generation Moto Z Play smartphone with modular capabilities is priced at Rs 27,999, and gets support for two new Moto Mods including the JBL SoundBoost 2 and the gamepad mod. The Moto Z2 Play has improved on a range of aspects, and here’s a look at all that has changed when compared to the Moto Z Play.

The biggest change in the Moto Z2 Play has arrived in the form of its design language. It is thinner and much lighter than its predecessor. This has been made possible with the use of metal instead of glass for building the smartphone. Instead of a ceramic rear panel as seen on the Moto Z Play, the successor is crafted with brushed metal. When it comes to the overall thickness, the Moto Z2 Play stands at 6mm and weighs just 145 grams. In comparison, the Moto Z Play measures 6.9mm in thickness and weighs 165 grams. As for the display, there is no change. Both the Moto Z2 Play and the predecessor pack a 5.5-inch full HD Super AMOLED display.

Processor, RAM, Storage

Moto Z2 Play is powered by a superior Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 SoC clocked at 2.2GHz and paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. There is support for further storage expansion via microSD card. In comparison, the Moto Z Play is equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor clocked at 2GHz and paired with Adreno 506 GPU, 3GB of RAM RAM and 32GB of expandable internal storage. On paper, the configuration of the Moto Z2 Play is a notch better than the older version as there is more storage, RAM, along with a better processor.

Additionally, the Moto Z2 Play runs on Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box, while the Moto Z Play, when launched, ran on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. ALSO READ: Moto Z2 Play First Impressions: Keeping the modular game going strong

The Moto Z2 Play features a 12-megapixel rear camera, down from 16-megapixel on the Moto Z Play. However, what has changed is that the camera lens on the Moto Z2 Play has a 1.4um sensor with f/1.7 aperture and support for dual auto-focus. Up front, there is 5-megapixel camera with wide-lens, f/2.2 aperture and dual-tone LED flash. In comparison, the rear camera on the Moto Z Play has ƒ/2.0 aperture, PDAF and auto-focus support. While megapixel count doesn’t completely define the camera output, the sensor size and type makes a difference. It is yet to be gauged how the lower megapixel count functions on the Moto Z2 Play. Nonetheless, the Moto Z2 Play has a lesser f-stop count which basically means more light can enter its lens and thus result in brighter images even in dim-lit environments.

There has been a slight downgrade when it comes to the battery of the Moto Z2 Play. The older Moto Z play is equipped with a 3,510mAh battery while the next-generation model packs just 3,000mAh battery. Although there are power mods available, but they cost an additional amount. Thus, reducing the battery capacity is bit of a disappointment in the case of the Moto Z2 Play. RELATED: Motorola Moto Z Hands-on and first impressions: It is all about the Mods

It is also worth mentioning that Motorola is making the Moto Z2 Play available at multiple channels including offline stores. There are also pre-booking offers on the smartphone which were not available when the Moto Z Play was launched.
