This new Motorola 5G MotoMod turns the Moto Z3 into the first 5G-enabled smartphone in the world

5G will be up to 10 times faster than 4G LTE

Motorola is now officially the first smartphone maker to launch a 5G-enabled mobile device. The Lenovo-owned smartphone maker launched the Moto Z3 today which comes with a snap-on module that converts the phone into a 5G-enabled device.

Motorola says the new 5G MotoMod comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 modem and Moto Z3 users simply need to snap opn the mod to upgrade their device when the new network is available. “Verizon Moto Z3 devices will be the first to gain access to the 5G network connection, followed by Verizon Moto Z2 devices,” the company said in a statement. 5G or fifth-generation mobile telephony is expected to be up to 10 times faster than the 4G LTE network currently offered by most telecom operators around the world.

Some of the key benefits with 5G will be lower latency for interactive contents like augmented reality and virtual reality. It will also allow consumers to connect all their smart devices to a single unified network instead of breaking their connection into multiple nodes. It also promises consistent and reliable network coverage.

Verizon’s upcoming 5G network is built on the millimeter wave technology that can offer faster peak download speeds. The US-based telecom operator to begin deploying its 5G network in select cities sometime in early 2019. With 5G MotoMod, the Moto Z3 users will be able to experience the fast wireless network without waiting for the company to launch a 5G-enabled device and it also includes an additional 2,000mAh battery so you don’t run of juice while experiencing super fast download speeds.

Most smartphone OEMs are expected to launch first 5G-enabled devices at Mobile World Congress 2019 next year. Qualcomm is the only company with a 5G modem compact enough to fit in a smartphone package. Globally, the 5G wireless network should become available only in the second half of 2020. Motorola has not revealed the price of its 5G MotoMod yet but plans to sell it as soon as Verizon begins commercial 5G service.

As far as Moto Z3 is concerned, it features a 6-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display, 4GB of RAM, 64GB storage and uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset. It comes with dual 12-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo and is backed by a 3,000mAh battery. The Moto Z3 will retail for $480 (around Rs 33,000), making it direct competitor to OnePlus 6.
