On the occasion of Sixth Passport Seva Divas, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj launched the new mPassport Seva app that will allow Indian citizens to apply for a passport from anywhere using their smartphone. The app has been made available on both Android and iOS platforms.
Until now, applicants were only able to apply for a passport from passport seva kendras (PSKs) in their area, or file an application online using their PC or laptop. With the mPassport Seva app, the government wants to ease the process. Users can create and login to their account, apply for a fresh passport or for renewal, make payments and also schedule appointments for the passport service.

“With the launch of this mPassport Seva App, citizens would not require access to a computer and printer to apply for passport services,” Swaraj said. In her address, she mentioned that currently there are 307 PSKs across the country, and 231 PSKs were setup by the government in the past four years. Going forward, the government aims to PSKs in each of 543 LS constituencies. She also announced that applicants can now apply for a passport from anywhere in India, not just from the place of their domicile.
It will benefit people who live and work away from their home, and prefer using their home address for which they have the required documents. What this means is if you are born and brought up in Mumbai and have your home in the city, but shifted to Delhi for work, you can apply for a passport in Delhi, while using Mumbai address.
“The police verification, if required for a specific passport, would be conducted at the address specified in the application form. The passport will be printed and despatched by the RPO selected for application submission by the applicant,” an official statement said.
