Telecom Minister, Kapil Sibal announced that nationwide mobile number portability will come into effect from February. This would allow subscribers to retain their cellphone numbers even if they shift from one circle to another. The government is also planning to let go of national roaming under its “One India, One Circle” plan.
The divide between rural and urban penetration of telecom services will be brought down as the policy aims at 70 percent telecom penetration in rural areas by 2017 and 100 percent telecom penetration in urban areas by 2020. Sibal also said that the increase in broadband connectivity and GDP are closely related and the smartphone and tablet market will enhance growth if domestic manufacturers strengthen their capabilities.
