The new Apple iPhones are unlikely to have the free Lightning-to-headphone jack converter accessory bundled in the box, according to a new report by an analyst with expertise on the matter. Cowen analyst Matthew D. Ramsay believes that 2018’s iPhones are unlikely to keep bundling the accessory that allows iPhone users to use 3.5mm wired headphones with their devices.

Up till the Apple iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus which were launched in 2015, the iPhone series had the 3.5mm headphone jack that allowed connectivity with a wide variety of wired headphones. From the Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus onwards, the phones have not included the legacy audio port. However, buyers do get an adapter in the box that allows you to connect the headphones through the phone’s Lightning port.

That adapter also includes a DAC to convert the digital signal from the Lightning port to an analog one for the headphones. These DACs are believed to be supplied by Cirrus Logic, an American chipmaker that also provides other chips for Apple’s iPhones. The report by the analyst suggests that Apple makes for 76 percent of Cirrus Logic’s revenue, and this prediction comes from Cirrus’ earnings report, which gives an insight into what might come.

The decision is likely to be only for new iPhone models, while older devices that remain on sale will continue to bundle the adapter, according to the report. The adapter will still be available as an optional extra for buyers of the new iPhones. The decision to drop the accessory might not go down well with some, although Apple would probably prefer its users to use wireless headphones, or headphones that connect directly into the Lightning port. Considering that it will be two years since the iPhone series dropped the headphone jack, Apple likely believes its customers are over it by now.
