Nintendo says it has sold 10 million units of Switch game console in the first nine months of its release. The strong sales for the hybrid console have boosted Japanese electronics company’s revenue by $3 billion.

Nintendo released Switch for select markets this March at a retail price of $300. According to Variety, Nintendo had sold 7.63 million units globally through the end of September. At this pace, the Switch is poised to outsell the original Wii launched in 2006 in terms of volume. The sales numbers are astounding especially considering the fact that Nintendo faced some manufacturing issues in its supply chain.

“It’s a powerful idea for a gamer to never have to leave their game experience behind. That’s been a cornerstone of our strong performance to date,” Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America told Variety.

The USP of Switch remains its dual use case which can be used a mobile gaming device or as a traditional console when connected to the dock. Nintendo has sold more than 100 million units of original Wii and it remains the best selling console to date for the company. Nintendo is not offering projection or sales detail for individual market, but Japan and the USA are expected to be its key markets.

Nintendo had earlier said that it has sold more than 2.6 million Switch units in the U.S. through the end of October. It also raised projections for Switch shipments for its fiscal year ending March 2018 to 14 million units. Nintendo managed to sell only 13.6 million units of its Wii U console over a period of five years and Switch is likely to surpass that number in the first year itself.

Another reason for Switch’s success is owed to the strong game lineup and Nintendo has now confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey have been purchased by more than 50 percent Switch owners. The game titles on the platform are likely to strengthen further with the availability of Bethesda’s Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and SquareEnix’s Project Octopath Traveler.

It is a refreshing change to see a hybrid console becoming one of the most loved gadgets of 2017. While Sony and Microsoft are concentrating improving performance with their Playstation and Xbox consoles, Nintendo has stuck to practicality and has reaped huge benefit.
