Nokia 3, the entry-level smartphone from HMD Global will skip the Android 7.1.2 Nougat update and jump straight to Android 8.0 Oreo. In a move similar to that of the Nokia 8, the Finnish startup has decided to skip the interim update in order to rollout the latest version of Android for its budget handset.
The update process for Nokia 3 was confirmed by Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, HMD Global in reply to a user query on Twitter. Since its debut in February at MWC, HMD Global has pitched faster software update as one of the major selling points for its smartphones. The company plans to update its entire lineup to Android 8.0 Oreo and its flagship Nokia 8 received the update last month.
HMD Global’s smartphone lineup includes Nokia 2, Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 8 for the global market. With Nokia 8 updated to Oreo, the company plans to upgrade Nokia 6 and Nokia 5 next. The mid-range smartphones are expected to get the update via beta testing this month and final rollout might begin by the end of January 2018. Sarvikas confirmed last week that he has reviewed the beta software for Nokia 6 and Nokia 5.
Nokia 3 should start receiving beta software by the end of January or early February next year. The stable rollout might happen in March, which would still be earlier than other brands. HMD Global pushes out beta updates for its smartphones via Nokia Phones Beta Lab programme and users will have to register their device in order to receive the beta version. It must also be noted that HMD Global launched its smartphones with Android Nougat and has promised to roll out Android P, the next major update as well to its devices.
Android 8.0 Oreo brings performance improvements to Google’s mobile operating system with faster boot time and efficient handling of background applications. It also brings a streamlined user experience and security improvements in the form of Google Play Protect that checks applications for malware in the background. It also brings user-centric features like picture-in-picture mode, smart text selection and autofill that works with password manages like LastPass.

The smartphone sports 8MP camera at the front as well as rear and supports 720p video recording. It is backed by a 2630mAh battery and retails for Rs 9,499 in India.
