After having surprised everyone with an unveiling at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, the Nokia 3310 was launched in India yesterday. The modern rendition of the iconic phone will cost you Rs 3,310 and goes on sale tomorrow. While the device does check all the right boxes when it comes to nostalgia, I believe HMD Global has got it wrong with the Nokia 3310.
Considering the design and durability of the original Nokia 3310, the new phone doesn’t seem to match up. When you hold it, the smaller and lighter body doesn’t give you the assurance of something that will be able to stop a bullet. The original Nokia 3310 was a phone that offered basic features – a game like Snake coupled with durability that brought along a cult status. The new avatar, though, offers none of this. In an environment that talks about 4G and VoLTE, and a consumer base that has a huge appetite for apps such as WhatsApp, the Nokia 3310 doesn’t quench real needs. Sure there’s color thrown into the display and the Snake game as well. And it’s a welcome move too. But Series 30+ for an operating system? I’m not quite sure of that.
We’ve also come a long way since the days of the original Nokia 3310. These days there’s no dearth of affordable Android smartphones that offer features such as 4G, VoLTE connectivity and support for Facebook and WhatsApp among others. If that wasn’t enough, there are rumors circulating about a Rs 1,000 feature phone that will offer 4G internet connectivity and access to a bunch of apps as well. Clearly, HMD Global has somehow missed the target with the pricing of the device. At Rs 3,310, there are much better options in the market that would attract consumer attention. Besides, it seems tad too expensive to reminisce a nostalgic device, rather than getting the real deal.
The Nokia 3310 is set to go on sale tomorrow in India via offline retail channels. Will you be buying one for yourself? Let us know in the comments section below.
