HMD Global will be one of the focus brands at this month’s MWC 2018. The company is expected to unveil a range of new Nokia-branded Android smartphones. The lineup is expected to include the Nokia 1, and upgraded Nokia 6, and Nokia 8 Sirocco which is said to be more like a tribute to the older Nokia 8800 Sirocco launched back in 2006.
Even as all eyes will be set for MWC debut of these Nokia phones, those who are keen on knowing their release date for the Indian market, here’s a tidbit of information which might help. Citing retail sources NPU claims that the Nokia 1, Nokia 6 (2018) edition, and Nokia 8 Sirocco, which is also referred as Nokia 9 in some reports, will be released in India starting April. The good news does not end there. The sources go on to claim that these anticipated Nokia phones will be joined by 1-2 more devices around the same time.
It is worth observing that this timeline of an India launch in April is not in contrast to how domestic launches take place, which is only a few weeks after the international announcement. The India launch of the new line of Nokia phones thus should not come as a surprise. Having said that, as HMD Global is yet to announce anything officially, it is advisable to wait till the announcements at MWC 2018.
Talking about the upcoming phones, the Nokia 1 is likely to be an entry-level smartphone and add to the series with Nokia 2, Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and others already available in the market. The Nokia 1 is speculated to run Android Oreo (Go Edition). The OS version is Google’s special software, which has been optimized to support hardware with low-end specifications without compromising on user experience.
In terms of specs, the Nokia 1 is rumored to come with an HD IPS LCD display and run either Qualcomm or MediaTek SoC under the hood with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. Past reports indicate that the smartphone could be priced somewhere around Rs 6,500.
Nokia 6 (2018), on the other hand, is already available in China. The second-generation Nokia 6 costs RMB 1,499 (approximately Rs 14,600) for the base model with 3GB of RAM, and RMB 1,699 (approximately Rs 16,600) for the 4GB RAM model. The model essentially improves upon chipset, RAM, and storage. It packs a 5.5-inch full HD LCD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC, and 3,000mAh battery.
It is the Nokia 8 Sirocco which is likely to garner most attention as there still remains a lack of clarity as to whether it will be a variant of the current Nokia 8 or be labeled as Nokia 9, thereby taking the Nokia Android phone series to its next step. As for specifications, the Nokia 8 Sirocco is believed to be a high-end smartphone running the newer Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC under the hood.
It is likely to pack a 5.5-inch quad HD resolution, 3D glass OLED display. The dual cameras on the smartphones are likely to include ZEISS-certified combination of a 12-megapixel sensor and a 13-megapixel sensor. Up front, there might be a 5-megapixel selfie camera. The smartphone is expected to arrive with IP67 certified dustproof and waterproof chassis.
At the same event, Nokia fans are likely to also witness a 4G variant of the iconic Nokia 3310. The feature phone received an upgrade after 17 years at last years’ MWC when HMD Global relaunched the Nokia 3310 with improved aesthetics and instantly stirred nostalgia among consumers. With the addition of 4G, the enhanced version of the Nokia 3310 will directly sit against Reliance’s JioPhone, which is touted as the ‘smart feature phone’.
