HMD Global, the Finnish startup with license to sell Nokia-branded smartphones, is set to announce new phones including its flagship Nokia 9 smartphone at MWC 2018 later this month. Nokia 9 has been subject to many leaks in the past and now the smartphone has been spotted in the wild.
According to an Indonesian website, the Nokia 9 prototype was spotted testing in Jakarta. The report claims that someone was seen testing the dual 13-megapixel rear camera setup on the smartphone ahead of its official launch. The pictures, though blurry, show the smartphone has a vertically-stacked dual camera system similar to that of Nokia 8.
The device in the pictures posted by the local website seem to match that of renders shared by a case maker earlier. The front of the device allegedly sports a 5.5-inch OLED display with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and one of the shots in particular seems to show rounded sides. A report early this week suggested that HMD Global will call the rumored Nokia 9 as Nokia 8 Sirocco when it announces the device for global market at MWC.
There are also reports suggesting that Nokia 7 Plus and not Nokia 9 will be the first 18:9 display-clad smartphone from HMD Global. So there is a possibility that the device in question is Nokia 7 Plus. We will have to wait and see what HMD Global actually announces at its Mobile World Congress event this month.
To recall, HMD Global made a big splash at MWC last year and made its official debut in the smartphone segment. However, the Finnish startup started selling its smartphones only in the second half of 2017. According to Counterpoint Research, HMD Global’s smartphone business is off to a great start with the company having captured 1 percent market share and surpassing brands like HTC, Sony and Google.
In terms of rumors, HMD Global is expected to showcase Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 9 or Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 1 based on Android Oreo (Go edition) and Nokia 3310 4G variant at MWC next month. The smartphones are likely to launch in India sometime in April.
