A few months ago, with the Android Oreo update, OnePlus 5 received the Face Unlock feature, that first debuted with the OnePlus 5T. Now, OnePlus has confirmed that the feature will soon be rolling out to the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T smartphones.
OnePlus Global Director Carl Pei said that the team will port Face Unlock to the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T in future open beta update. Pei teased Face Unlock for older OnePlus devices on Twitter in December 2017, but hadn’t spoken about it until now.
Samsung introduced iris scanning with the launch of Galaxy Note 7 last year, but the feature really took off with the launch of Galaxy S8 and Note 8 this year. With the launch of iPhone X, Apple brought sophistication to the technology by adding TrueDepth sensors that create a mathematical model of user’s face to create a match. OnePlus’ Face Unlock feature on OnePlus 5T, does not use any of the sensors, but relies entirely on the front-facing camera and software algorithms.
Users need to enroll their face into the system similar to fingerprint scanning technology, which allows users to unlock their device simply by looking at it. The feature is definitely not foolproof but it has already proven to be the fastest face unlock system on a smartphone right now.
