OnePlus, like other smartphone makers, started implementing portrait mode on its smartphones, with the release of OnePlus 5 last year. Since the launch of OnePlus 5, the Chinese smartphone maker has refined the feature with the release of OnePlus 5 late last year and OnePlus 6 during the first half of this year. While OnePlus 6 further refines the portrait mode, the smartphone has a feature that remains unique to it – selfie portrait mode.
With the release of OxygenOS 5.1.6, OnePlus added selfie portrait mode to OnePlus 6. Unlike the portrait mode that relies on dual rear camera system, the selfie portrait mode uses the single front camera and software algorithms similar to Google’s implementation on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. Since the feature does not require dedicated hardware and is being powered by company’s native software, it would be easier for OnePlus to port the feature to older models.
Now, the company has announced that it plans to bring the front-facing portrait mode to OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T, the flagship devices from last year. OnePlus confirmed its plan to bring selfie portrait mode to these two devices at the Open Ears forum held last week in India. Both OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T support portrait mode implementation on the rear camera and rely on the secondary image sensor.
The OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T, just like the OnePlus 6, have a 16-megapixel selfie shooter and the output results are almost identical. OnePlus recently updated the camera on all of the last three devices to correct the oil painting effect and it has now confirmed that it is bringing the selfie-portrait feature based on user feedback as well.

OnePlus released face unlock feature with the launch of OnePlus 5T last year and consequently brought the feature to older smartphone like the OnePlus 5. It has also rolled out Project Treble for older smartphones including the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T alongside other camera fixes. The company is known for its timely release of software updates and OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T users should expect to see face unlock in an upcoming release of OxygenOS Open Beta software.
