OnePlus has just announced a new smartphone; to be exact, a new shade of its current flagship, the OnePlus 6 in the Indian market. The company is somewhat following its tradition of introducing a red variant that it introduced with the launch of the Lava Red edition of its previous flagship, the OnePlus 5T, earlier this year. OnePlus has priced the device at Rs 39,999 and it will go on sale from July 16 on Amazon India. This new color comes weeks after the company announced the Silk White colored variant of the OnePlus 6.

The launch of the Red and the Silk White variant has been different as OnePlus had teased the Silk White variant at its launch event while the Red variant was not teased or hinted at during the launch or after. The company sent us the Red version of the device and I’ve spent a few days using the device. Here are my first impressions of the Red variant of the OnePlus 6 and also why I think the company launched this new color variant.

That captivating Red shade

To get things out of the way, there is nothing different between the Red OnePlus 6, the Avengers Edition of the device, the Silk White version, and the Mirror Black, and the Midnight Black when it comes to the internals of the device. The only differences may be the RAM and the storage, depending on what variant you’ve bought.

To recap, OnePlus 6 Red will come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC along with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The company has added a 6.28-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED panel with 2280×1080 pixels resolution, and 19:9 aspect ratio. The device comes with that infamous notch. The company has added a 16-megapixel sensor along with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) along with a 20-megapixel secondary sensor on the back along with a 16-megapixel camera on the front for selfies.

The device runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based Oxygen OS while running on a 3,300 mAh battery with support for Dash charging. I was previously using the Avengers Edition OnePlus 6 and did not experience any difference in performance with the OnePlus 6 Red.

Moving back to the exterior, OnePlus claims that it used a never before used blend of the optical coating, and evaporative film along with six panels of glass to give the device a premium finish. The glass back of the device also helps in providing depth the coating. I fell in love with the color when I first unboxed the device and it has been a crowd puller every time I took it out of my pocket. Personally, I consider this to be the best reproduction of this color and shade in comparison to the Lava Red OnePlus 5T or all the other Red-colored smartphones that I have seen till date.

The company has also added a custom red-colored wallpaper to the device to provide it with a uniform look when it comes to the hardware as well as the software of the device. However, because of the glass back, the back of the device is a fingerprint magnet and I am not a fan on how the red color fades out a bit when I hold the front of the device at an angle. It may be because of the screen protector on the front of the device, however, I did not remove to check this hypothesis. The front of the device is also a fingerprint magnet but it is relatively easier to wipe off the fingerprints.

Following the trend

It looks like the company is following the trend that Apple set with the launch of the RED edition of the iPhone but the company is at least being creative about it. One thing to note here is that OnePlus is not the only company that has launched a red color variant of their device with other companies including previously mentioned Apple, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, Sony, Samsung, and Honor launching different shades of the color. Some of the devices may not be available in the Indian market but the devices do exist.

Though, I think that it is clever on part of OnePlus to have a time gap between color variant launches because this provides breathing space to each variant allowing users to make their mind and then buy the device rather than launching each color with a gap of one week. The gap and new color variants also pull in new customers who were previously sitting on the fence to make the decision in buying the OnePlus 6.

Final thoughts

OnePlus has already created a compelling device when it comes to the performance that a smartphone should offer while packing the latest and greatest hardware along with a good almost stock-like Android experience. The company is already offering fast software updates while committing to bi-monthly software updates along with two years of Android version upgrades and one year of extended Android security patch updates.

Now is the right time for the company to launch new colors offering users options while creating true crowd-puller offerings such as the OnePlus 6 Red edition. We have already reviewed the OnePlus 6 so you can check how it performs in the real world.

To conclude, if you were looking at OnePlus 6 as your next device and want something different to the typical black and white color options you get on most phones, then this is the right time to take a closer look at the OnePlus 6 red edition.
