American specialty industrial-grade glass manufacturer Corning has announced that the next version of its popular Gorilla Glass line-up, Gorilla Glass 6, will debut globally on the next Oppo flagship smartphone. The company unveiled the latest version of its most recognizable product recently, stating that the new version is tougher than ever before, and can withstand up to 15 drops.
However, Corning Gorilla Glass 6 is not said to be more scratch-resistant than its predecessor, which is one of the key reasons why smartphone makers adopt it as the top layer for their screens. Nonetheless, Corning Gorilla Glass 6 is said to be the most advanced version by the company yet. It’s also significantly slimmer than before while retaining its scratch resistance and improving on durability, thus allow smartphone makers to build slimmer, better phones.
While Corning hasn’t announced which Oppo flagship smartphone is slated to be the world’s first Gorilla Glass 6 device, we’re safely assuming that it will be the upcoming Oppo F9 and F9 Pro. Oppo has been teasing its new F-series smartphones for the last few days, and the launch could be this month. “We are excited to have Oppo adopt Gorilla Glass 6,” said John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass. “Oppo’s new flagship model will provide consumers, who depend on their smartphone for every interaction in their digital lives, increased protection against multiple drops.”
Most current-generation smartphone adopt Corning Gorilla Glass solutions, with Oppo’s own Find X and R15 models using the previous generation Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The Oppo F9 and F9 Pro are also expected to have a new type of notch called the ‘waterdrop’, which reduces the non-screen space to just enough for the front camera.
