Oppo Find X is the latest to receive the teardown treatment that details how its pop-up camera works. The Find X from Oppo and NEX series from Vivo show the future of all-screen smartphones with cameras that pop out of an enclosure.

While smartphones with moving parts is not expected to become mainstream just yet, the Oppo Find X is the most fascinating smartphone of this year. It features a pop-up camera module which quickly raises the front and rear cameras whenever they need to be activated. In the brief time spent with the smartphone at the launch event last month, the mechanism does seem to work reliably and now a teardown from Zol shows how Oppo got the mechanism to work.

The mechanism seems to be similar to that of Vivo NEX that uses a linear actuator to lift the camera module. The actuator uses a motor marked in yellow color supported by guiding rails marked in red. There are ribbon cables marked green that connect the camera sensors along with the components of 3D face recognition to the rest of the smartphone.

There also seems to be material that acts as cushion for the moving mechanism of the camera module. There are also screws that turn the rotation of an electric motor into linear motion but it seems to lack the springs that helped protect the mechanism when it was pushed down. The teardown shows how much of the internal area is taken up by this pop-up camera mechanism. Apart from the front and rear camera, this pop-up camera module also houses a 3D face recognition system that uses a dot projector, IR camera and IR fill light.

The Oppo Find X is a flagship smartphone with 6.42-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset coupled with 8GB RAM and 128GB or 256 storage. It offers dual rear camera setup comprising of 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel cameras and a 25-megapixel selfie camera.

Despite the pop-up camera taking up most space, Oppo found a way to pack a large 3,730mAh battery that support fast charging. The smartphone runs Android 8.1 Oreo with ColorOS 5.1 and will be available in red and blue color. The smartphone will be officially launched in India on July 12.
