Oppo Neo smartphone to launch in India for Rs 11,990, comes with a 4.5-inch display and quad-core processor

Oppo is teasing its mid-range smartphone called the Neo for Rs 11,990 in India. The Chinese company recently announced its entry in India with the launch of the N1 smartphone for a whopping Rs 39,999. With the Neo, Oppo is now tapping the mid-range mobile segment in India, which currently is dominated by the likes of Micromax, Karbonn, Lava and others.

Unlike the Oppo N1, the Neo smartphone comes with a smaller display and has a rather mediocre set of specifications. It has a 4.5-inch FWGA (854×480 pixels) IPS display, which the company claims comes with an improved touch-screen technology and is compatible with Gloves mode feature as well. This lets a user operate the phone’s touchscreen even while with gloves on.

As far as the hardware of the phone is concerned, the Oppo Neo is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core processor and sports a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Surprisingly, there are not many details of the hardware available publicly yet.

The company has put special focus on the gesture controls in the smartphone and says that the phone offers a gesture panel and supports various gesture-based controls including double tapping to wake the screen up. One can simply draw figures on this gesture panel to directly go to an app assigned for the respective figure. So for instance, drawing a circle on this panel will navigate directly to camera. The concept of gesture controls on a phone is not new. Other smartphone players including Lava and Micromax too had introduced similar controls on their phones.

At this price point, the Oppo Neo smartphone will compete against the Motorola Moto G smartphone which come with a 4.5-inch HD (720p) display and a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, and is priced for Rs 12,999 for the 8GB variant. You can read our first impressions of the Moto G here.

Also, the phone will face competition from the likes of Micromax Canvas Ego A113 which comes with a 4.7-inch qHD display and a quad-core processor, and is available for Rs 13,990 online, and Lava Iris 506Q with a 5-inch qHD display, quad-core processor, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and priced at Rs 10,999. Other alternatives include Xolo Q1000 which comes with a 5-inch HD display display and a quad-core processor, and is now available for Rs 11,999, and Intex Aqua Curve which comes with a 5-inch One Glass Solution tech base display and a quad-core processor, and is priced at Rs 12,490.
