Philips W6610 hands-on and first impressions

Philips today made its re-entry into the Indian market by launching a series of smartphones in an already crowded smartphone market. The W6610 is one of the mid-range smartphones launched today, which packs in a massive 5,300mAh battery in order to cater to power users. The company claims that the battery can provide up to a staggering 32hours of talk time on a single charge. One disadvantage of such an enormous battery though is that the device is quite heavy and thick. We went hands-on with the device to find out if there is more to this device besides the big battery.

Starting with its looks, and as mentioned above the W6610 is pretty thick and looks rather ancient compared to its competition. However these extra millimeters of thickness are primarily to accommodate the huge battery, which somewhat justifies it. The phone is made out of rubberized plastic with curved edges. The rubberized back panel helps provide a good grip, but the phone does weigh on the heavier side. Overall, if you are conscious about looks of a phone, you will certainly not be impressed with its design. The back panel is removable, which houses a non-removable battery, SIM card slot and on the sides are the power key and volume rocker.

The phone’s display is decent for its resolution, but viewing angles are not great. The display tends to wash out at extreme angles.

Philips-W6610-5Talking of the processor, the phone runs on a 1.3GHz quad-core chipset, which is coupled with 1GB of RAM.  The quad-core processor seems to run fine, and is expected to offer a smooth performance especially noting that the phone comes with minimal software tweaks and additional features. Also included is 4GB of internal storage that is expandable via a microSD card. On the software front, it runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, but the company has not mentioned if it will be upgradable to the latest version.

As far as the camera performance is concerned, the ambient lighting conditions were not good enough to test the phone’s 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front facing camera. The rear camera is accompanied by a flash light for using in dimly lit areas.

Philips-W6610-3Overall, the Philips W6610 is undoubtedly the best out there in terms of its battery size. But it is bound to face tough competition from smartphones loaded with better specifications and priced lower. We will reserve our judgments about the performance till we have put it through its paces in our detailed review.
