Qualcomm Snapdragon 670, the successor to Snapdragon 660, is likely to be the most powerful mid-range SoC yet from the San Diego-based mobile chipmaker. Ahead of its official announcement, the mid-range chipset has been spotted on Geekbench with impressive core performance.
Qualcomm could have started testing the upcoming chipset on a test device and Geekbench listing shows the device runs Android 8.1.0 Oreo and has 6GB of RAM. In terms of score, the Snapdragon 670 has scored 1863 in single-core test and 5,256 in the multi-core test. The octa-more mobile chipset has a base clock frequency of 1.71GHz.
The Geekbench score suggests it will have performance matching that of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8xx series chipset meant for premium flagship devices. The rumors point at the chipset being fabricated using a 10nm FinFET architecture and will include four Kryo 360 Gold cores and four Kryo 385 silver cores. The SoC is expected to include Adreno 620 graphics processor and its RenderScript project score suggests performance matching that of Snapdragon 820’s graphics prowess.
The Adreno 620 has scored 6404 points in RenderScript project, which is close to the score achieved by Snapdragon 820 in 2016. Qualcomm has been trying to improve graphics performance on its chip lineup in a big way. The Snapdragon 845, the next-generation flagship mobile platform with Adreno 630 GPU brings 30 percent improvement in visual processing over its predecessor.
The Snapdragon 670 could be announced alongside Snapdragon 640 and 460 chipsets and will include Snapdragon X16 LTE modem and Spectra 260 image signal processor. The chipset should be seen on successors to smartphones currently powered by Snapdragon 660 platform. The most popular devices currently powered by Snapdragon 660 include Oppo R11, R11 Plus, Vivo X20, X20 Plus, Asus ZenFone 4 and Xiaomi Mi Note 3.
Qualcomm is yet to officially detail the launch of Snapdragon 670 and might announce the chipset at MWC next month. Considering the leaked benchmark scores, the next generation mid-range smartphones are likely to be powerful than flagship smartphones from 2016.
