Leading fabless semiconductor and chipset developer Qualcomm is reportedly developing new Snapdragon 400-series chipsets meant for use on smartphones that run on the Android Go platform. According to reports, the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 429 and Snapdragon 439 are new chipsets that will feature on affordable smartphones in the coming months.

The information was revealed through a tweet by WinFuture reporter Roland Quandt, who suggests that the new chipsets are being developed to run on smartphones powered by the light-weight Android Go platform. Android Go is a version of Android Oreo that has been optimized for low-end devices with basic hardware, designed to run smoothly even on devices with only 1GB of RAM, and with a focus on using less mobile data. The chipsets will be compatible with full-fledged Android as well, and not just the lighter Go versions.

The tweet also elaborates a bit on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 439, stating that it’s a variant of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625. It’s expected to come with eight Cortex-A53 cores, and will be fabricated on the 14nm process. The Snapdragon 625 was developed two years ago, and is now a dated option.

Despite this, it’s still in use on key devices, including the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and others, because of its capabilities. While the 439 is expected to improve a bit on it, it will likely maintain the efficiency and reliability of the chipset.

There isn’t anything else known about the new chipsets for the time being, except that based on the version numbers, they’re likely to be successors to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425/427 and Snapdragon 435. The 14nm process will significantly improve both performance and energy efficiency on budget smartphones as well.
