However, the highlight of the meeting was Reliance JioPhone, which has reached the 25 million users milestone, and company is now aiming for 100 million mark.
Reliance Jio also announced the JioPhone 2 with QWERTY keypad and a widescreen display. The company also highlighted the fact that 500 million people in India still use feature phones without any internet access, and it aims to change that with the new “Monsoon Hungama” offer. Yes, JioPhone was launched last year as an “Effectively Free” phone, but users had to pay a deposit of Rs 1,500, which will be refunded over a period of three years. But, if you go for the Rs 501 exchange offer, you won’t be eligible for the “Effectively Free” phone.
Moving on, the JioPhone is powered by KaiOS and it comes with Google Assistant with support for voice commands. One of the interesting announcements Jio made at the AGM was the arrival of Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp on the KaiOS powered JioPhone.
It makes sense, these are the three most popular apps in India, and it makes sense to have them on the platform. We recently had our hands on the JioPhone with these apps and the experience was good. But the general rollout will begin on August 15. Jio also recently started rolling out Google Maps for the JioPhone and it is available to download from the Jio App Store.
If you are interested in buying a JioPhone, the company has already started taking registrations for the same. You simply need to visit the company website and register with your details such as area PIN code, name, email address and phone number.
