The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 is just around the around and amongst a host of some run-of-the-mill speculations about upcoming smartphones, a rather interesting development has happened. At one of the most anticipated events from the tech world, India’s telecom giant Reliance Jio is going to hold a joint press conference with Samsung on February 28. This can be viewed as an interesting development given how Reliance Jio is already dethroning major Indian players in the telcom industry in less than six month of the commercial rollout of its 4G services. After annexing the Indian sphere, it seems Reliance Jio is headed to make its presence felt at the global level where major smartphone companies perceive India as a highly lucrative market.
Samsung has started sending out media invites for the said conference. The invite neatly places the Jio Digital Life logo on one corner with the signature Samsung logo sitting opposite to it. It does not mention anything other than the date. It is worth mentioning that it is not the first time the two players have been spoken about together. Three years before the commercial rollout of Jio in 2016, the company had reportedly been in talks with Samsung to bring affordable LTE-enabled smartphones in India.
Although it is not certain if the joint conference is indicative of anything on the lines of announcing a new affordable 4G VoLTE range coming from Samsung, however, time and again there have been such surprise appearances of brands where they announce their upcoming projects or detail newer technology. Samsung is no stranger to such an alliance either. At its Galaxy S7 launch event, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a surprise visit where he detailed how the two companies were collaborating to push virtual reality in mobile phones and social networking. “We want to make Facebook the best video platform for virtual reality and Samsung is the only company in the world that can provide a good experience in terms of virtual reality,” Zuckerberg had said. Coming to the supposed equation between Reliance Jio and Samsung; both being current leaders in their segment at the moment, a collaboration on either future technology or bundling up of services through apps, software, services, etc, it but serves as an important business strategy for both the brands. Jio has already crossed 100 million in userbase and as per a recent IDC report, Samsung continues to lead the smartphone market in terms of value and volume with 25.1 percent market share in Q4, 2016 and an annual growth of 3.2 percent in CY 2016.
In the invite for the MWC event, Samsung says it looks forward to “foster engagement and participation among industry leaders, governments, and communities, by discussing Jio’s successful 4G LTE business and how it has transformed the everyday lives of 1.3 billion Indians.” Now, this could either mean a global showcasing of the adoption of Jio within a short span of time in India, or suggest a larger project where Jio could possibly be looking at collaboration with other industry leaders to further improve its services back home. With an open-ended agenda, as evident from the invite, we might also be looking at Reliance Jio’s global expansion by joining hands with Samsung – the current global leader when it comes to smartphones. It is worth mentioning that Reliance Jio is working on further addressing the country’s connectivity issues with fiber optics-based broadband service. The service is already under pilot in a few cities in India and is expected to be soon rolled out commercially. Other than its disruptive 4G services and the upcoming broadband service, the company is also looking at enriching its media content which is bundled with the 4G services.
