Launched last year, the JioPhone is currently the highest selling phone in India with a total market share of 36 percent. The phone is particularly popular in the rural areas, thanks to its low cost and easy accessibility to 4G internet. It also comes with a simple design and is coupled with Jio’s barrage of 4G services. Now, at its 41st annual general meeting (AGM) Reliance Industries announced the successor to the feature phone, called the JioPhone 2. Let’s quickly compare the two and see what’s new in the handset.
Price and availability
The JioPhone is currently available for Rs 1,500. The phone can be purchased from Jio’s official website and various other offline and online stores. It’s part of a three-year refundable scheme, by the end of which users will be refunded Rs 1,500. The JioPhone 2 is priced a little higher at Rs 2,999 and will be available for purchase from August 15. However, retail partners haven’t been mentioned by the company yet.
Design and display
While both phones have the same 2.4-inch QVGA display, the JioPhone 2 comes with a QWERTY keypad, like a blackberry, instead of a simple number pad featured on the previous JioPhone. It also supports a 4-way navigational pad.
Connectivity and specifications
While the JioPhone came with a single-SIM support, the new JioPhone 2 features dual-SIM support and gives access to VoWiFi calling. It’s unclear right now if the device will support other networks on either of its SIM slots, and is likely to be SIM locked to Jio on both slots. Besides that, both phones support 4G VoLTE, FM radio, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC.
The two JioPhones also support the same 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. They also come with a 2-megapixel rear camera and a VGA front camera for taking pictures. The phones are fueled by the same 2,000 mAh battery underneath the hood.
