  • Today it was reported that some UIDAI "agents" were selling Aadhaar data for a mere Rs 500.

  • UIDAI has now denied any such breach.

  • The authority says that the servers and all details are fully secure and safe.

After reports of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) servers allegedly being breached by certain “agents” who sold Aadhaar details of billions of citizens for a mere Rs 500, the authority has denied any such issue. UIDAI says that claims of “bypassing or duping the Aadhaar enrollment system are totally unfounded”, and that this was a case of “misreporting”.

UIDAI assured that there has not been any Aadhaar data breach, and that the data, including the biometric information is fully safe and secure. According to UIDAI, the said ‘search facility’, which was allegedly shared in exchange for Rs 500, as The Tribune reported, has actually been given for the “purpose of grievance redressal to the designated personnel and state government officials to help residents only by entering their Aadhaar no. or EID”. The authority says that the reported case appears to be an instance of misuse of the grievance redressal search facility.

UIDAI says that it maintains complete log and traceability of the facility, and any misuse can be traced and appropriate action taken. The authority has also promised that a legal action is being taken against the people involved in the present case. Further, the authority has also clarified that the grievance redressal search facility given access to only a limited amount of data, which excludes the biometric information.

While Aadhaar numbers have still been shared, UIDAI also makes it clear that the said numbers aren’t exactly a secret and are shared with authorized agencies all the time. Sharing Aadhaar number is not a security threat, they said.
